The Ulma family. Premiere of the radio play "ULma" by Marta Sokolowska.
The beatification of a Polish family who sheltered Jews during the Holocaust
Polish Radio Rzeszów invites you to the PREMIERE of Marta Sokołowska's radio play entitled "ULma" directed by Maciej Wikotor. On September 10 at 13:05 and 20:05, you will be able to listen to the broadcast on the Rzeszów radio station.
ULma is an alternative history of the Ulma family and their Jewish neighbors told from the perspective of the eldest daughters, Basia and Stasia. Together with the retrospective story of adult women, we move to Markowa and learn about the "real" events of March 23-24, 1944 and what happened later.
So what was it really like? What happened in the house at the end of Markowa Street? And who could help people who rejected the inhumane law imposed by the occupier and refused to hand over a Jewish father with four sons and two Jewish women with a small child to death? Is it possible to save them?
ULma is a metaphor for the unobvious connection of the bee family and the human family that took care of them. It is a clash of the perfectly organized world of bees with the war machine of extermination. Are the bees, whose goal is the survival of the family, even at the expense of the individuals, able to effectively oppose the murder of the inhabitants of the house in Markowa and save them? And if so, can we find out their true motivation?
By adopting the perspective of children in the radio play, we try to give the Ulmas' story multidimensionality and expand the field of reflection on their fate.
– says Marta Sokołowska, the author of the script
The radio play is devoted to the tragic story of the murder of Wiktoria and Józef Ulma, their five children and eight people of Jewish origin, including a several-year-old girl.
The radio play was attended by, among others: Dagny Mikoś, Anna Demczuk, Grażyna Misiorowska, Robert Chodur and Paweł Gładyś.
