Factories from China are thinking about moving to Poland
Press review, PAP, 6 August 2020
Companies that rely on factories in China are learning the lessons of the pandemic, considering moving some of their production closer to their own borders. Industries incl. electronics and automotive take into account Poland. The first factory from the Far East may be open with us in a year - predicts Thursday's "Puls Biznesu".
After the experience with supply chains interrupted by COVID-19, when goods made in China did not reach Europe for some time, companies are considering moving some of their production closer to their own borders, the daily writes.
It indicates that the so-called nearshoring, i.e. the transfer of business processes to a geographically close country, is an opportunity for Poland.
According to Jan Barbasiewicz, partner and director of the logistics and industrial space department at Colliers International, inquiries about such opportunities are no longer individual cases. From Poland, goods can be delivered to most cities in the most densely populated part of Europe within 24 hours, and to the entire continent within 48 hours.
Who is thinking of moving to Poland?
"A very strong increase in interest in Poland comes from the electronics industry, both consumer, i.e. offering devices, and producing components, e.g. for the automotive or household appliances industry. It is true that inquiries about warehouse space prevail, but they are also interested in space for assembly plants or production plants" - says Barbasiewicz, quoted by "PB".
The second industry that analyzes the possibilities of relocating plants to Poland is automotive. "We are currently carrying out several such projects, and our clients are suppliers of major car concerns," says Barbasiewicz.
According to him, the process of launching production in Poland by a foreign company normally takes from one to two years. The site analysis itself and its selection takes 6 to 12 months. Developers need the same amount of time after signing the contract to build the facility. Currently, due to the pandemic, companies are particularly cautious and carefully analyze all the pros and cons before making decisions, which means that decisions are made much slower.
"The first inquiries came to us in January, February and March. The analyzes are so advanced that we hope to sign the first contract in September or October, and the operational commissioning of the first facility could take place even in mid-2021." - says Barbasiewicz.

AliExpress will fight for Poland. The plans include stationary shop
- We want to provide Polish sellers with the possibility of selling on Aliexpress. We believe that this will open up many opportunities for them - says Gary Topp, CEO of AliExpress in Central and Eastern Europe in an interview with Business Insider Polska. He also talks about the cooperation of the Chinese platform with the Blik payment system created in Poland.
Patryk Pallus: What was the biggest challenge for AliExpress during the coronavirus pandemic?
Gary Topp: This situation was a huge challenge for everyone around the world. In the case of Aliexpress in Poland, the biggest challenge was the organization of efficient logistics and the implementation of product deliveries at the time of closing the borders. It turned out that we were able to run our business fairly well. A few months ago, we started working with InPost. People during the pandemic appreciated the possibility of picking up our parcels at parcel lockers belonging to our local partner. We also provided protective measures for Poczta Polska couriers, who also deliver our shipments to customers. Currently, we see over 100 percent. Increased sales of selected products marked with the fast delivery label, thanks to the new service, packages are delivered to customers within 3 or 7 days.
In February, Polish media reported that there was a decline in Poles' activity on AliExpress, and the number of parcels sent to Poland also decreased. How did it look like in the following months?
In February, the situation with the coronavirus pandemic in China was the worst, hence the drop in shipments. In the following months, when the so-called lockdown, the number of orders on AliExpress by Polish users has increased. Customers were shopping online because brick-and-mortar stores were closed.
You recently announced the start of cooperation between Blik and AliExpress and Alipay. What is it about?
We made it possible to pay with Blik for purchases on AliExpress. It happened thanks to the integration of Blik, created in Poland, with our payment method Alipay. This is a very innovative service that provides the best e-commerce user experience for mobile payments.
What can AliExpress benefit from introducing Blik as a payment method?
In addition to ensuring fast and secure payments that are desired by our Polish customers, in mid-July we launched a promotion in which our users can expect special offers related to Blik payments. In the long term, we hope AliExpress and Blik can become strong long-term partners. Our internal data shows that Blik is already one of the best-performing payment methods in all our markets, and I believe AliExpress could be a strong partner should Blik start looking for new markets outside of Poland.
Polish influencers were involved in the already completed summer sale. Did they promote AliExpress?
Yes, we see a stronger and stronger relationship between social media and e-commerce. We have already cooperated with hundreds of Polish influencers, including during the summer sale that has just ended. It is exciting for us as new business models based on content creation begin to appear on the Polish market. For example, by using the new AliExpress Connect platform, influencers can use live streaming to engage our customers by telling them about products, which helps them make purchasing decisions. We hope this new platform will provide even more opportunities for both consumers and creators.
In 2021, new regulations will enter into force to ensure that shipments from China will be thoroughly checked and thus subject to customs duties, which has so far been avoided. This means additional costs for customers. Are you not afraid of falling sales?
As a sales platform, I can't say much about it. We always comply with local laws and regulations in different markets and require the sellers on our platform to do the same.
When will Polish sellers be able to offer their products on AliExpress? Recently, such an opportunity was given to companies from Russia or Turkey, and earlier from other European countries.
We want to provide Polish sellers with the opportunity to sell on AliExpress. We believe that this will open up many opportunities for them. They will be able to reach customers not only in Poland, but also all over the world, in Europe, Asia and America. Unfortunately, I cannot yet confirm the specific date when it will happen.

An even larger Amazon warehouse in Poland. "An investment carried out in a very difficult time"
The e-commerce logistics center, which is to open in August this year in Łódź, will be significantly enlarged. It will no longer have 40 thousand. sq m, but a total of over 70 thousand. sqm. surface.
Thanks to the expansion of the warehouse by an additional 33,000 sqm. the number of workers needed will increase. Therefore, over the next 12 months, the giant will employ another 500 people here.
The demand is increasing
It will be Amazon's ninth logistics center in Poland, after warehouses in Sady near Poznań, Sosnowiec, Kołbaskowo near Szczecin, Bielany Wrocławskie (two company's facilities), Pawlikowice near Łódź, Okmiany near Bolesławiec and in Gliwice, as well as the Amazon Technology Development Center in Gdańsk and the Amazon branch. Web Services in Warsaw.
The investments are a response to the growing customer demand for Amazon services across Europe and the significantly expanding range of the company's operations in central Poland, ”the company said in a release.
The Łódź authorities have a favorable approach to the plans just announced by Amazon.
This investment is of particular importance because it is implemented in a very difficult time - both for business and employees - during the coronavirus epidemic, when many companies reduce employment, reduce salaries or suspend the implementation of planned investments. That is why the newly created jobs are so important now, because they mean employment opportunities and a source of income for many families in Łódź, explains Hanna Zdanowska, Mayor of Łódź.
